Note: Transcript of death entry in Stockport Express:

Hatton. Jan 22, William Hatton, of 26 Shaw Heath, aged 44 years. Deceased carried on business as a plumber. He left home between 6-30 and 7 o'clock on Saturday morning. About noon his wife took up his note-book, to write a note, whan a photograph f
ell out. On the back of the photo was written, "Good-bye to all. Forgive me for doing this. I cannot stand so much worry and trouble. You will find me in Sykes". W. Hatton.

Deceased's eldest son, Ernest, who lives in Simpson street, was informed and he went to the reservoirs and at the boating lake found his father's cap and coat near a hole which had been made in the ice and then saw in the water what proved to be th
e body of his father. A big crowd had gathered on the adjacent football ground for the match, Stockport County v. Burnley, and the finding off the body created a painful sensation. At the inquest it transpired that the deceased had been depressed i
n consequence of slackness of business and financial matters, and the jury found that he had put an end to his life during a period of temporary insanity.

(subsequent note: Since finding this cutting I have traced a son of one of William's daughters, Gertrude, and it appears that William's second wife, Jennie, was a heavy drinker and most of the children left the family home because of this. One has to assume that this may have contributed to William's suicide)
